Xinxiang Food Industry-University Collaboration: What Foreign Founders in China's Food Sector Should Know

A recent government-backed matchmaking event in Yuanyang County, Xinxiang, highlights how foreign founders in China's food industry can tap university research, local incentives, and industry clusters for growth.

Xinxiang Food Industry-University Collaboration: What Foreign Founders in China's Food Sector Should Know

For foreign founders building food or agri-tech businesses in China, understanding how local governments connect industry with academic research can unlock practical opportunities. A recent event in Yuanyang County, under Xinxiang Municipality in Henan Province, illustrates this model. While the event itself was aimed at domestic firms, the mechanisms—technology transfer centers, joint research institutes, and talent programs—are open to foreign-invested enterprises that engage with local authorities.

Event Overview: A Platform for Industry-Academia Matching

Xinxiang City recently held a food industry chain matchmaking event (Yuanyang session) in Yuanyang County. Over 240 participants attended, including experts and scholars from more than 16 key universities and research institutes in the food sector—such as Tongji University, Jiangnan University, Zhengzhou University, and Henan Agricultural University—as well as leaders from key food enterprises across the city. The event theme was “Talent Gathers in Yuanyang, Food Creates the Future—University-Locality Collaboration for Intelligence, Science and Innovation Empowering the Food Industry.” Its purpose was to advance integrated development of education, science and technology, and talent; smooth channels for industry-university-research cooperation in the food chain; promote the commercialization of university research; and empower high-quality development of the city's food industry.

Yuanyang's Food Industry: A Cluster with Scale and Ambition

Yuanyang County is a leader in Xinxiang's food industry and has been listed among the “National Top Ten Prefabricated Dish Industry Bases” for two consecutive years. The Jiangnan University Technology Transfer Center Yuanyang Branch is located there, helping accelerate the county's transition from “Central Plains Granary” to “Innovation Kitchen.” Currently, Yuanyang's food industry is at a critical stage of moving from “quantity” to “quality” and from “manufacturing” to “creation,” with an urgent need for talent and innovation.

As the county's first leading industry, the green food industry aims to build a 100-billion-yuan industrial cluster. The industrial park has already attracted 159 well-known food enterprises, including Jiuduo Rouduo, Yuxuan, and Tongle. The county now has over 200 green food production enterprises, with total industrial chain revenue exceeding 30 billion yuan. Several single products rank first in national sales.

Collaboration Mechanisms: How the Local Government Supports Innovation

The county treats university-enterprise and university-locality cooperation as a core lever to overcome industrial technological bottlenecks and cultivate new quality productive forces. It has established the Jiangnan University Technology Transfer Center Yuanyang Branch and co-built the Yuanyang Industrial Innovation Research Institute with the University of Jinan. To date, the county has introduced provincial and municipal “Science and Technology Vice Presidents,” dispatched 67 science and technology commissioners at various levels, signed more than 20 university-enterprise and university-locality cooperation projects, newly cultivated 11 national high-tech enterprises, 2 national-level specialized and sophisticated “Little Giant” enterprises, and 4 provincial-level specialized and sophisticated small and medium-sized enterprises. Technology contract transaction value has exceeded 1 billion yuan.

Event Highlights: Concrete Matchmaking and Outcomes

At the opening ceremony, the Yuanyang County Food Industry Development Service Center gave a special presentation on the county's conditions and food industry development. A centralized university-enterprise cooperation matchmaking ceremony was held, advancing project connections in three batches. University expert representatives shared keynote insights on discipline development, industry-university-research cooperation models, and typical case studies.

A negotiation zone was set up for face-to-face exchanges between university experts and enterprise representatives to precisely identify enterprise technological pain points and connect on cooperation matters such as achievement transformation, technical breakthroughs, platform co-construction, and talent training. The county Science and Technology Bureau compiled a “Compilation of University Scientific and Technological Achievements” containing over 40 achievements, distributed to participating enterprises, building a bridge for precise matching of technical needs and research results. According to statistics, more than 15 projects in technical breakthroughs, achievement transformation, and platform co-construction were connected at the event.

Voices from Participants: University and Enterprise Perspectives

Lou Yang, a professor at Jiangnan University's School of Chemical and Materials Engineering, is a native of Yuanyang. Returning home, he brought not only technology but also a sense of hometown sentiment. He stated that Jiangnan University will align with Yuanyang County's industrial needs, focusing on challenges in deep processing, preservation and storage, quality safety, and intelligent production. The university will conduct joint technical research on the production frontlines, integrating R&D, pilot testing, and application to transform more research results into new products, processes, and benefits. It will also provide sustained talent support through co-building internship and training bases and joint talent cultivation.

Enterprises feel the impact more directly. Hou Huibin, general manager of Debang Canliao (Xinxiang) Food Technology Co., Ltd., acknowledged that leveraging the platform to connect with top universities and promote research project implementation will greatly enhance the company. In the future, the company will cooperate with universities in technical cooperation and talent training.

Zou Jian, dean of the School of Food and Biological Engineering at Henan University of Animal Husbandry and Economy, introduced that the school's disciplines are highly aligned with Yuanyang County's complete industrial chain—from primary farming and breeding to secondary processing and tertiary services. Since 2017, the school has conducted deep cooperation with Yuanyang food enterprises, covering technology transformation, technical breakthroughs, product development, and standard improvement. The signing of contracts with three enterprises at the event was based on solid prior cooperation, and more substantive industrial results are expected in the future.

Taking Collaboration to the Factory Floor

In the afternoon, university expert teams visited six representative food enterprises in Yuanyang County, inspecting production processes on the frontlines, learning about technical bottlenecks and development plans, conducting on-site “diagnosis and consultation,” and discussing technical solutions one-on-one, moving industry-university-research cooperation from the conference hall to the workshop.

What This Means for Foreign Founders

For foreign founders operating or planning to register a company in China's food sector, this event underscores several practical avenues:

The event further opened channels between university research and local industrial development. Next, Yuanyang County will continue to deepen university-enterprise and university-locality cooperation mechanisms, regularly build matchmaking platforms, empower industrial upgrading with technological innovation, consolidate development foundations with talent cultivation, and strive to promote the scaled, high-end, and intelligent development of the green food industry, continuously enhancing Yuanyang County's green food industry brand.

Foreign founders interested in exploring these opportunities should engage with local authorities early, understand the available support mechanisms, and consider how their business plans align with local industry priorities.
